Day 1

The flight to Dallas wasn’t bad, except after ordering a latte at Tulleys I ordered a diet coke on the plane and later had to use the bathroom VERY badly. Other than that, it was fine. After a while I listened to some music, and had to contain my urge to sing along to “I’m Yours.” I don’t think everyone sitting in earshot would have appreciated it. Anyway, the flight was safe. A little turbulence here and there, but eventually they started playing The Office on those little TVs. It made me happy. I had a window seat for that flight and I have a window seat for my flight to Madrid. :)

So I kind of had a “woah…” moment earlier… The flight took about 3.5 hours. The plane took off at 9am, and when we landed I looked at my watch and it said 12:30. But it was really 2:30 (in Dallas). So technically I TRAVELED FORWARD IN TIME. LIKE TWO HOURS FORWARD. And then I'm going to do it AGAIN when I get to Spain. I know it’s not really legit… but it was a little mind-boggling to sleep-deprived me.

DFW is a nice airport. It’s huge. It’s very nicely air-conditioned and there are mosaics on the floor.
I’m still really nervous about going to Spain. I keep feeling my neck muscles tense up and my appetite still hasn’t fully returned. I’m concerned that my luggage won’t make it all the way to Granada with me, but I know that should be the least of my worries (Yes, Mom, my passport is safe in my purse). There is a Starbucks in DFW, which is comforting. I had to fight the urge to buy a Starbucks “Dallas” or “Fort Worth” coffee mug… and I’m also feeling really self-conscious that I’m wearing a sweatshirt that says “SEATTLE” loud and clear. I thought about buying a Tshirt that says “TEXAS” but didn’t. My carry-on is too big and I would have looked like a goofy American in Spain. Which I'm sure I will anyways, but oh, well. My ukulele case is also earning me many stares. I thought they were going to make me check it, but luckily they didn’t.

I’m really excited to see what movies they’re playing on the plane. I thought I saw that they were going to be showing Kung Fu Panda 2, but I haven’t seen the 1st one. I hope they’re good ones. I found a list in one of the airplane magazines and it had pretty slim pickins, but it might have been a different list.
One thing that feels really weird is not being able to connect to the internet (I couldn’t connect to the free wifi network at DFW) but what’s weirder is not having a cell phone. I guess I’ll learn to not have it with me all the time.

And now I’m gonna chillax until we start boarding… about 1 hour.

That was yesterday when I was at DFW. Since I couldn’t connect to the free wifi there I’m just going to combine these two days.

The flight to Madrid was fine, but I admit I was pretty disappointed when we didn’t have our own little entertainment screen things in the seats in front of us. They showed the movie “Win Win,” and then they started showing The Office again!! :)

After we landed in Madrid I ran into Gwen and we and two other girls went to get our boarding passes for Granada since they didn’t print them for us in the States. It took us a while to figure out where the gate was. That flight was fine, too. It was interesting to see the Spanish landscape because it’s so different from the US. Spain is a very beautiful country.

I feel like I’m rambling so I'll wrap this up… we got our luggage and took a taxi to Alminares del Genil to get to Conchi’s apartment. It took us a while to find but everyone here is really nice and they were very willing to help us out.

Orientation is tomorrow! I don’t know how far away the University is, but Conchi will show us in the morning.

I’ll be posting pictures soon!

Lots of love,

Amy
